When Fran Wilde bleated an opportunistically belated ‘think of the children’ – we did. We thought about the fact that the next generation will be the ones to suffer at the hands of a Wellington amalgamation.
We have already heard it from Rodney residents; children will grow up with less access to pools, parks and playgrounds. Their library services reduced and their social welfare needs unheard by the bureaucrats.
Those emerging into adulthood will face an unaffordable property market, pushed into outer areas that too have exorbitant rates and even less council services.
If we asked them, future generations would not be happy about amalgamation. They would instantly recognise that “one voice” that arises from amalgamation is likely to be that of Fran herself.
